Hello, and welcome back to Team Colors by Carrie, the place to be for sports related quotes, crafts, food, party ideas and more! I’m so glad you are here!

Today I’ve got a fun craft project that will make the cutest little sports themed party decorations! We could all use more “cute” in our lives, right?

So let’s get started!

First, you’ll need to gather your supplies:

  • Yarn
  • Googly eyes
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Optional accessories: felt, toothpick

Next, let’s make our pompom maker:

Decide how big you want your pom pom to be, and then cut 2 cardboard circles a little bigger than that size. You can use a jar or a can to help you trace two circles.

Cut out the two circles.

Trace a smaller circle in the middle of the two circles. A quarter is good size to use.

Cut out the smaller circle from the larger circles, to create donut shapes.

Line up the two donuts and cut out a section to pull the yarn through.

Now on to making our first pompom!

Put the 2 cardboard donuts together. Hold a yarn strand & wrap it around the donuts.

Continue wrapping until the yarn is at least ½” thick (I went from one end to the other, then turned around and wrapped back to the beginning). The more times you wrap the yarn, the fluffier the pompom will be!

To cut the pompom off of the cardboard, slip your scissors in-between the two donuts and begin cutting. Continue all the way around the donut, holding the yarn in place.

Cut a length of yarn that’s at least 12”. Slide the yarn in-between the two donuts, encircling the whole donut. Tie a double knot, pulling both ends tightly, to secure your pompom!

Remove the cardboard donuts.

Shake out the pom pom and then start trimming the longer, loose strands. Continue until your pompom is nice & round, stopping periodically to shake it or roll it between your hands to help the long ends stand up.

Glue on the eyes, and let dry!

You can stop right there, or add some optional accessories!

Option 1 – add felt feet

Cut a square of felt about as big as the finished pompom. Fold the square in half, then cut out a heart shape.

Glue the pompom to the pointed end of the heart, so the top of the heart becomes the fronts of the feet. And make sure your googly eyes are facing forward! Let the glue dry.

Option 2 – add team spirit flag

Cut a rectangle of felt. Fold the rectangle in half, and cut a triangular flag shape.

Unfold the flag, and lay a toothpick in the middle of the flag for a flagpole. Put glue on one side of the flag. Fold the flag over the toothpick, and press gently. Let the glue dry!

Stick the end of the toothpick into the pompom, and you’re done!

Wondering how I made this one with 2 colors of yarn? Follow the same directions, but take one end of both yarn colors, and wrap them around the donut at the same time. It goes a lot faster when using double the yarn!

Aren’t these fun? I think I’m going to make a whole group of these little sports fans to sit in the “stands” at the next game!

See you soon!
