Hey, sports fans!

I don’t know about you, but I like to be comfortable when I’m watching a sporting event.  Game day style is important too, but not at the expense of comfort.  For the warm weather games of summer and early Fall, there is nothing more comfortable than a t-shirt dress, but finding one in your favorite team’s colors can be a little challenging.

Never fear, because I have the solution!

How does a dress made from 2 t-shirts sound?  How about a project that just requires some very basic sewing skills (and by basic, I mean you need to be able to sew a straight line)?

Sound good?  Let’s get started!

Gather up your supplies, and let’s go!

Step 1 – Collect the Supplies

Here’s what you need (from your local hobby / craft store):

  • 1 t-shirt in your normal size (for the top)
    • I went 1 size bigger, for a loose fit
  • 1 t-shirt in a men’s Large, XL or XXL (depending on how full you want the bottom of the dress)
    • I used a men’s XL
    • I also should have washed both shirts first, but forgot to do so!
  • A sharp scissors
  • Matching thread
  • Stick pins
  • A sewing machine

 Step 2 – Cut the “top” t-shirt

  • Try on the shirt you want for the top, and decide how long you want it to be
    • I wanted mine just above the waist line.
  • Fold the shirt up to mark the lenght, or measure how much you need to cut off
  • Take off the shirt, and lay it flat
  • Add an extra ½” to the top (for the seam), and cut off the bottom of the shirt
  • Set aside the part you cut off (and try these DIY coordinating accessories).

Step 3 – Cut the “bottom” t-shirt

  • Lay the shirt out flat
  • Decide how long you want the bottom of your dress to be
  • Measure up from bottom seam and cut a straight line
    • I wanted mine a little longer, so cut from just under one sleeve, straight across to just under the other sleeve
  • Fold in cut off part in half, and trim as needed to make sure you have a straight cut

Step 4 – Pin the pieces together

  • Turn the bottom t-shirt inside out
  • Use pins to mark the sides of both shirts
  • Fold the shirts in half, and use pins to mark the middle of the front, and the middle of the back, on both t-shirts
  • Slide the top t-shirt into the bottom t-shirt
  • Use the pins to align the sides, front and backs, and start pinning the shirts together
  • Add more pins to secure all the way around

Step 5 – Sewing

  • Sew a ½’ seam all the way around the 2 pieces of t-shirt
  • Tuck / fold the excess material from the bottom t-shirt as you go
  • Trim the threads
  • Turn the bottom t-shirt back to right side out

Wasn’t that fun and easy?  Your new dress is so easy to wear to football games and tailgating, and can be dressed up with some fun jewelry (from Team Colors By Carrie of course)!

You could also make this dress with a tank top, if the weather is still really warm where you live!

Until next week,

Carrie
