Hello sports fans! I know you football fans are enjoying life right now, with the college football National Championship game last night and the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs over the weekend. Who are you picking to make it to the big game?
It may be near the end of football season, but we’ve had an unseasonably warm spell here in Georgia, which does NOT make it feel much like winter football weather. I know it’s been pretty cold in most parts of the country, however, and many of you are getting outside for skating, skiing or watching your kids participate in winter activities.
Keeping warm is a challenge this time of year, and while you can purchase warmers for your hands and feet, they tend to be single use and disposable. For those that prefer reusable ones, I’m going to show you how to make some warmers using old flannel shirts and other things you probably have at home!
I’m making mine in my favorite team colors (green and gold = Green Bay Packers), but you can use any flannel you have at home, or can find at your local thrift store.
Ready to give them a try?

Gather the following supplies:
- Flannel
- Rice
- A sharp scissors
- A ruler
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins

Step 1 – Cut the Pieces
- Use your ruler to measure out 4” squares on your flannel
- Cut the squares (cutting 2 at a time makes this go faster)
- You will need 2 squares for each warmer, or 4 squares for a set of warmers
Step 2 – Sew the sides
- Pin two squares together, right side facing in
- Sew around three sides, starting and ending approximately 1” in on the 4th side, and leaving an opening in the center.
- Remove the pins
- Turn the whole thing right-side out.
Step 3 – Fill with rice
- Fill each pouch with rice, about ¾ full.
- I rolled a sheet or paper to create a “funnel to make the filling process easier
Step 4 – Finish
- Tuck in the raw edge
- Pin the edge closed
- Sew it shut
Step 5 – How to Use
- Heat a pair in the microwave for about 30 seconds
- They won’t stay warm for hours, but are perfect for walking the dog or waiting for the school bus!

Aren’t these fun?
You will want to hold on to the extra flannel, and stay tuned for another project next week that uses flannel in your favorite team colors!
Make sure you are subscribed to the blog so you don’t miss the fun, and share with a friend who might like these (and other) crafts too!
Until next week,
Carrie
