Hello fellow sports fans!
Are you starting to think about game day and tailgate parties? Don’t forget the decorations!
Today, I’ve got an easy DIY garland that you can leave outside, use to decorate the tent at a tailgate party, or the deck railing in your back yard! And the best part is that it’s made from plastic tablecloths from a dollar store!
Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Collect the Supplies
Here’s what you need:
- Plastic tablecloths in your team colors
- Get the long rectangular ones (54” x 108” is a common size)
- Each tablecloth will make about 20 tassels
- Sharp scissors
- Stapler
- String or ribbon for hanging

Step 2 – Cut the Tassel
- Remove a tablecloth from its wrapper, and set it on the table with DOUBLE FOLD away from you
- Unroll one end, measure in 10-12 inches, then cut through all layers (I just guessed instead of actually measuring)
- Take the piece you just cut, and cut it in half along the fold line, creating two long, skinny rectangles.

- Re-fold each of the pieces in half
- Stack the 2 pieces of top of each other
- Put the folded edges away from you.
- Starting at the open end, cut ~ ½ to 1 inch wide strips (no need to measure), stopping about 2” inch from the top
- If the plastic moves around a lot while you are cutting the strips, place the stapler on the folded edge to help hold it still
Step 3 – Finish the Tassel
- Open up the 2 pieces, and set one aside
- Lay 1 piece so that the cut strips are on either side

- Roll up the uncut middle section, keeping the tassel strips out of the way
- Bend the whole thing in half, making a loop.

- Staple below the loop, but above all the tassel strips, leaving room to thread the string through
- Give the tassel a good shake, and gently untangle any strips that are twisted

Step 4 – Make More Tassels
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have enough tassels to make a garland.
Step 5 – String the Garland
- Cut a piece of string or twine long enough for your garland, plus some extra for hanging
- Slide the string through the loops of the tassels
- Space the tassels as desired
- You may want to staple them in place, to keep them from sliding.
- Hang your finished garland, and enjoy!
Here’s what the finished garland looks like hanging over my front door, ready to greet guests:

How would it look in your team colors? Or in colors to match your birthday party theme? Or in orange and black for Halloween?

Until next week,
