Hey, sports fans!

I feel like a little kid counting down days until Christmas, because for me, it is almost the most wonderful time of the year!

But Carrie, it’s only July, you say?  Well, yes, that’s true, but I’m not talking about Christmas when I talk about my favorite time of year!

I am just slightly obsessed when it comes to football, and August means NFL pre-season, which means that the first games of the NCAA College Football season and the NFL regular season are just around the corner!

I love getting ready for football season by changing out some of my home décor to add in more of my favorite team’s colors.  A few subtle reminder of the team that truly has your heart is right at home in your office, the man cave, or a she shed.

So today, we are creating something in your team colors that is not only decorative, but practical too!  How about some coasters for your favorite hot or cold beverage?

Let collect the supplies and get started!

Step 1 – Collect the Supplies

 Here’s what you need:

  • Yarn in 2 colors
  • Felt in a color to match
  • Low temp hot glue gun
  • Low temp glue sticks
  • Scissors

Step 2 – Cut the felt

  • Cut the felt into squares, a little bigger than the size of the coaster you want
  • I used a coaster I had to estimate, and cut 4” squares

Step 3 – “Measure” the yarn

  • You will need approximately 3 yards of each color of yarn
  • The fastest way to “measure” a yard is to fully extend your arms, and use the distance between your hands as about 1 yard.  Pull out about 3 lengths of yarn for each color (keep the yarn all in 1 piece)
  • Repeat with the other yarn color, so you have 2 pieces that are each 3 yards long
  • Fold each piece in half

Step 4 – Glue the Yarn to the felt

  • Plug in your glue gun to heat it up
  • Put a small amount of glue in the center of the felt.
  • Carefully place the folded ends of the yarn onto the glue.
  • Let cure for a few seconds

  • Twist a small section of yarn (twirling the yarn over and over, toward the coaster)
  • Hold the twisted yarn, add some hot glue, and glue the twisted yarn strands around the center, in a circle
  • Continue twisting small sections of yarn, and gluing one small section at a time
    • Periodically straighten the loose ends of yarn, as they will try and untwist in the opposite direction you are twisting
  • Use your fingers and hand to keep the yarn as flat as possible as you go.
  • Continue until you reach the size you want your coaster to be.

Step 5 – Finishing Up

  • Trim the excess yarn, close to the coaster.
  • Add some glue, and tuck the ends under the coaster yarn
    • You can use a toothpick to push the ends in
  • Trim the excess felt away from the yarn
    • Be careful not to cut through the yarn
    • It helps to hold the scissors at an angle
  • NOTE: If your coaster is a little bumpy, just hold a warm iron on it for a few seconds to flatten it

Wasn’t that fun and easy?  These fun little coasters are perfect for the den or the man cave (or on my desk in my office), and would even make a wonderful gift set for your favorite sports fan!

And stay tuned for a 3 color version, coming soon!  Make sure you are signed up for the e-mails, so you don’t miss it!

Until next week,

Carrie
