Hello fellow sports fans!

I’m back today with the 6th and final piece in my sports wall décor series.  Are you ready for something for the hockey fans?

Let’s get started with our hockey puck!

Step 1 – Gather the Supplies

 Here’s what you need:

  • Stretched canvas in the size of your choice (get the ones that are primed with gesso)
  • Acrylic paints in black and white
  • Large paint brush – 2″ is good
  • Small paint brush – a ¼” brush is good for the detail
  • Masking tape
  • Newspapers (to protect your work area)
  • A pencil

.

Step 3 – Draw the lines

  • Use your pencil to draw the lines in the hockey puck shape
  • I did the outside lines first, then the edge where the top and side meet
  • Mask off the lines

 .

Step 4 – Paint the edge of the puck black

  • Shake your black paint well before starting
  • Squirt some paint on the side of the puck
  • Use the large brush to fill in this area
  • Let dry (read the directions on the paint for dry time).
  • Wash your brush (acrylic paint washes up with soap and water, but read your directions).
  • Add a second coat of black paint if desired, and let dry
  • Remove the masking tape (all except the piece in the upper right)

 .

Step 5 – Paint the top of the puck dark gray

  • Shake your black paint and white well before starting
  • Mix your gray paint
    • Squirt some black paint onto the newspaper
    • Squirt some white paint on top of the black
    • Use a paintbrush to mix well
    • NOTE: use more paint than you think you might need, because it is hard to match the exact gray color later
  • Paint the top surface of the puck, using the small brush for the edges close to the black sides, and the large brush for the rest
  • Let dry (the paint will lighten up as it dries, so don’t worry if it looks too dark when wet)
  • Wash your brush.
  • Remove the last piece of masking tape

 .

Step 6 – Paint the edge white

  • Shake your white paint well before starting
  • Squirt some paint on the newspaper
  • Use the edge of the narrow brush to paint the lines
    • You will get a smoother line if you keep the paintbrush loaded with paint
  • Let dry.
  • Wash your brush .
  • Add a second coat of white paint if desired, and let dry
  • Optional – using just a touch of paint, draw lines on the edge of the puck to show the curved surface

That’s it!  Your work of art is ready to hang on the wall!

I can’t believe I’m at the end of this series.  Now I just need to get them hung on the wall of my office / studio, so I can show you how they all look together!

If you missed any of the first 5 parts, just click the links to see the football, baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball that were completed over the last several months.

Until next week ,
